VMware Horizon View Blackscreen

This is one of the top issues I have seen when working with Horizon View. I think the hard thing with this is the fact that there is so many different things that can cause this issue. This also seems to be one of the hardest things for tier 1 staff to work with. I am going to try my best to provide a complete list of possible things that can cause this.

VMware Agents not being installed in the correct order.

I am starting off with this one as it is one of the first things i check when i don't know the view environment i am working with. It is also a good thing to have in any VMware Horizon View health check. This is also a easy fix and can really help stabilize the Horizon View environment. VMware has a great KB 2118048 that includes all the details on what order agents must be installed in.

Incorrect video driver version installed on the view virtual machine

This issue goes with the one listed above. If you install / upgrade the VMware Tools after view agent has been installed you will then have a Video card drive issues. The VMware KB 1029706 will give you more details on this but over all you need to make sure to install the items in the correct order. The other time i have seen a issue like this is if you install a application that has a video driver that installs with it.

Not having the correct network ports open

So this one can kind of be a little hard to fix. This can be both network ports that are not configured correctly in the Horizon View environment and also network ports being blocked on end users networks. Lets start with things that you can control. For all internal items VMware has another great KB 1026498 that will walk you though all items you need to look for. Now for the items that are out of your control say a end user is travailing and maybe the network that users is using is blocking 4172 the port for PCoIP. One option i have used for users i have worked with for this issue is having them switch to RDP display protocol while at this location. This may not be to optimal choice but it will most likely let the users work while at this location.

Misconfigured Horizon View connection server settings

If you do not have your PCoIP security gateway configuration correct on your connection / security servers this can also lead to a black screen issue. VMware has a KB 1036208 that has a video and documentation on how to configure the settings correctly.

Virtual machine video RAM shortage

When a View virtual machine does not have the correct amount of RAM you can also see a black screen issue. For steps to get the correct memory settings on the virtual machine follow this VMware KB 1027899
