What's New in This Release

Horizon Connection Server

  • Horizon Console
    • Horizon Console is the latest version of the Web interface through which you can create and manage virtual desktops and published desktops and applications. Horizon Console also integrates VMware Horizon Just-in-Time Management Platform (JMP) Integrated Workflow features for managing workspaces. For more information, see the VMware Horizon Console Administration document.
  • Deployment on VMware Cloud for AWS
    • You can deploy desktop pools that contain full virtual machines on VMware Cloud on AWS to scale Horizon 7 desktops and applications on an elastic cloud platform.
  • Virtual Desktops
    • You can create a virtual machine in vSphere to use Virtualization-based security (VBS). Using a virtual machine enabled with VBS provides better protection from vulnerabilities within and malicious exploits to the operating system.
    • For an automated desktop pool that uses full virtual machines, if you use a virtual machine enabled with VBS, you can add a vTPM device for enhanced security.
    • Horizon 7 supports vSphere 6.7.
  • Instant Clones
    • Multiple vGPU profiles are supported for instant clones.
    • You can select either PCoIP or VMware Blast (non h264 hardware encode) as a display protocol with NVIDIA GRID vGPU for an instant-clone desktop pool.
    • You can change the 3D vSGA or 3D software settings for instant-clone pools.
    • Horizon 7 version 7.5 supports instant-clone API in vSphere 6.7.
  • Cloud Pod Architecture
    • The total session limit is increased to 200,000 and the total site limit is increased to 10.
    • You can configure desktop shortcuts for global entitlements.
  • Horizon Help Desk Tool
    • Horizon Help Desk Tool is integrated into Horizon Console
    • You can troubleshoot Linux desktop sessions in Horizon Help Desk Tool in Horizon Console.
    • Horizon Help Desk Tool displays the following metrics:
      • Skype for Business pairing status
      • State of the application or desktop session
      • Disk IOPS data

Horizon Agent for Linux

  • Control of USB Redirection, Clipboard Redirection, and Client Drive Redirection
Using VMware User Environment Manager, you can define policies that allow you to control the USB redirection, clipboard copy-and-paste redirection, and client drive redirection (CDR) features.
  • Help Desk Tool Support
You can now access the Horizon Help Desk Tool to troubleshoot Linux desktop sessions. This feature is available from Horizon Console.
  • Network Intelligence Transport Support for VMware Blast
Network Intelligence is supported for VMware Blast. Based on current network conditions, Blast  dynamically chooses to use either UDP or TCP to provide the best user experience  when transmitting data.

Horizon Agent

  • HTML5 Multimedia Redirection support for the Edge browser
You can now use the Edge browser with the HTML5 Multimedia Redirection feature. Previously, only the Chrome browser was supported.
  • Support for subdirectories with URL Content Redirection
URL Content Redirection now supports subdirectories. For example, if you specify .*.acme.com/software in a rule, all URLs that include the text acme.com and the subdirectory /software are redirected. For example, http://www.acme.com/software is redirected.
  • Simple Device Orientation (SDO) Sensor Redirection
The SDO sensor redirection can sense changes in the screen orientation of a client device and accordingly display a different view on the device.
  • VMware Logon Monitor
VMware Logon Monitor monitors Windows user logons and reports performance metrics intended to help administrators, support staff, and developers to troubleshoot slow logon performance.
  • VMware Horizon Performance Tracker
VMware Horizon Performance Tracker runs in a remote desktop and monitors the performance of the display protocol and system resource usage. You can also create an application pool and run Horizon Performance Tracker as a published application.

Horizon GPO Bundle

  • The Horizon Performance Tracker ADMX template file (perf_tracker.admx) contains policy settings related to Horizon Performance Tracker.

Horizon Client

For information about new features in Horizon Client 4.8, including HTML Access, see the Horizon Clients Documentation page.

Horizon JMP Server

  • Horizon JMP Server installer and JMP Integrated Workflow features
The new JMP (Just-in-Time Management Platform) Integrated Workflow features in Horizon Console allow you to easily define and manage desktop workspaces that consist of a desktop operating system, applications, and settings. These features integrate the JMP technologies (Instant Clones for rapid image creation, VMware App Volumes™ for real-time application delivery, and VMware User Environment Manager™ for policies and personalization) into a single workflow. For more information, see Getting Started with JMP Integrated Workflow in the VMware Horizon Console Administrationdocument and the VMware Horizon JMP Server Installation and Setup Guide document.

Horizon 7 Security

  • Horizon 7 Security Features
    • Horizon 7 supports TLS 1.2.

Resolved Issues

  • Searching for users in one-way or two-way trusted domains does not provide any search results if you use the Single Sign-On link to access Horizon Help Desk Tool.
  • An error dialog window appears in Horizon Administrator when you cancel the Add vCenter Server operation and then add the same vCenter server again. When you click OK in the error dialog, close the Add vCenter Server wizard and invoke the wizard again to add the same vCenter server and click Next, an error message for identifying the validity of the server appears.
  • With the FIPS mode enabled, a pod that just joined a pod federation appears as having a status of red and offline when viewed from the Horizon Administrator dashboard of the first initialized pod in the same Cloud Pod Architecture environment.
  • When a desktop pool is assigned multiple VLANs, Horizon Agent VMs on desktops that could get assigned to a VLAN different from the parent VM, don’t get a valid IP address.
  • A Horizon instant-clone agent for Linux desktops has a 4096x4096 resolution limitation.
  • After a recompose, refresh, or rebalance operation with a persistent disk, Windows 10 desktops might fail to start, or become untiled from the Start menu. Windows applications can include applications such as Windows Store, native applications, Edge Browser, and Cortana Search. This issue affects multiple version of Windows 10 intermittently, depending on applications used. This problem affects the following desktop types:
    • Linked-clone dedicated desktops with a persistent disk where the persistent disk is used to store app settings.
    • Linked-clone floating desktops with Persona Management enabled that use a persistent disk as a local disk and the Persona Management setting Roam Local Settings Folders enabled.
    • This issue is not seen with floating or dedicated linked-clone desktop pools where the user profile is redirected to network share with or without Persona Management enabled. If Persona Management is enabled, the user profile is set to roam with VMware Persona GPO settings.
    • This issue is not seen when persistent disk and/or Persona Management are used to persist only My Documents and Exchange 365 .pst/ost files.
  • An instant-clone desktop pool configured to use NVIDIA GRID vGPU fails to launch instant-clone virtual desktops or instant-clone virtual desktops with black screen and never recovers with the PCoIP or Blast display protocol using non h264 hardware encode.  Non h264 hardware encode is uncommon for Blast.  An example of non h264 hardware encode is any NVIDIA GPU profile that limits frame buffer to 512MB and has Windows 10 as the remote desktop operating version.
  • When you use an underscore character in the desktop pool naming pattern, certain actions in Horizon 7 do not work correctly.
  • When you use F5 or the Refresh button to refresh Horizon Help Desk Tool, sometimes the Horizon Help Desk Tool icon disappears and you get a STRING_ID issue on the Web page.
  • When you click the Help Desk icon from Horizon Administrator, single sign-on to Horizon Help Desk Tool fails. This can occur because your UPN does not exist in Active Directory.
  • Login fails if you use a case insensitive user name to login to Horizon Help Desk Tool.
  • Sometimes SSO to a locked Horizon Agent session might not work when Horizon Client is unlocked and the Login as current user feature is enabled on Horizon Client.
  • A virtual machine, which is marked as deleted, is actually not deleted because the disk space reclamation operation has timed out.
  • Provisioning of virtual machines based on instant clone desktop pools configured to use NVIDIA GRID vGPU fails with the following error: The amount of graphics resource available in the parent resource pool is insufficient for the operation.
  • Instant clones do not provision correctly when the ESXi host vLAN settings has the forged transmits setting set to reject.
  • The end-user cannot connect to the desktop after logging off from the desktop.
  • When you attempt to get status of the desktops using the vdmadmin.exe -M -m *C0*-* command, you get an error.
  • Removing a user assignment from a dedicated linked-clone desktop causes a different user to be unassigned from another linked-clone desktop.
  • Horizon Persona Management misinterprets the path of a folder containing a backslash at the end of the folder name.
  • Horizon Help Desk Tool performance is slow and takes time to look up users.
  • The end-user cannot connect to the desktop after logging-off from the desktop.
  • Changes to configured TLS protocols and/or cipher suites in LDAP will not re-apply correctly to the VMware Horizon View Security Gateway Component service after it is restarted.
